At Renton Airport – Clayton Scott
Field
In 2013, a jet blast deflector replacement project at Clayton Scott Field
showcased a radically improved design. Unique among airports worldwide, new
functional details blueprinted a portal emblem for this community with
environmental and local history. Windcatcher elevates the public
image of Renton and the airport.
In over twelve months of planning, community representatives embraced its
complete design – with form, function, and art. Advisory groups wholeheartedly
supporting the completion of Windcatcher include the FAA, Renton
Airport/Clayton Scott Field, City of Renton, Renton Arts Commission, and The
Boeing Company. Three approved sections—about 275 feet—combine to create Windcatcher:
Two sections of kinetic art/security fence named Flow Wall; and a central
section of Boeing airplane figures, the Airplane Mural. The blast wall was
engineered to accommodate all these design elements as a singular installation.
Windcatcher as partially complete.
Intentionally and gradually, the City of Renton moves forward to make public
improvements enhancing image. And with these investments come the renewing
vitality of the community. Renton Airport/Clayton Scott Field stands as a key
gateway and focal point for the city.
As seen today, Windcatcher stands incomplete without the Flow
Wall. In 2015, the Boeing airplane mural evoked proud community response. Encouraged
about the project continuation, the artist then installed proof-of-concept
segments of Flow Wall. Upon final completion, the Flow Wall will form the
finishing element of the blast wall to become Windcatcher,
another Renton landmark.

intended and approved complete Windcatcher, a project awaiting completion
funding.
